Dear … …….
Thank you for your letter to President Barroso, who asked me to reply to your email of 13 July 2009.
I have taken note of your concerns as regards the provisions in Turkish Law which establish an imprisonment sentence from one to five years for the issuers of unpaid cheques.
On 8 May 2009, the Turkish government tabled a draft Cheque Law to the Turkish Grand National Assembly, which would abolish imprisonment sentences for unpaid cheques. This draft Law was submitted for the review of two parliamentary committees (the Judicial Committee and the EU Harmonisation Committee), before the summer recess of the Turkish Grand National Assembly. The Commission will monitor these discussions in the coming months.
Yours sincerely
